The biggest change to UK immigration law in recent times took place with the introduction of the new points based system (PBS). The system replaced the previous work based categories and implemented 5 Tiers of working. The following Tiers have already been introduced:
> Tier 1 (General) – Highly skilled workers, post-study workers, investors and entrepreneurs
> Tier 2 – Skilled workers with a job offer from a licensed sponsor
> Tier 5 – Temporary workers (e.g. working holiday visa)
Tier 2 replaced the previous work permit category. Workers who wish to apply under Tier 2 must have a certificate of sponsorship from their prospective employers and pass the points based assessment to apply. There are also categories for temporary workers who wish to come to the UK and do temporary work for licensed sponsors.
