If you have suffered injuries as a result of a criminal act you are entitled to claim compensation for your injuries. A criminal act for this purpose includes a crime of violence, for example an unprovoked assault, rape, arson or poisoning.

The Criminal Injures Compensation Authority (CICA) is a government body that compensates victims of a criminal injury. The time limit to apply is two years from the date of the incident.

Awards for injuries are based on a Tariff system and so there is a set amount of money for each injury claimed. The CICA can refuse to make an award or reduce the amount if they feel you did not assist the police in bringing the assailant to justice.
